We rate this shotgun at 70 to 75 percent finishwise, but believe we have included sufficient photography for prospective buyers to judge finish grade for themselves. There is some metal scuffing affecting about 30 percent of the receiver and about 15 percent of the barrel. While the stock and forend are affected by light scratches, pecks and dimples, this one has plain old grease or dirt affecting about 30 percent of its stock and forend surface. Still, we consider that the mechanism and bore are both excellent on this Howa-made Smith & Wesson 3000 pump. It may be grease, or it may be lead residue from the officers qualifying with slugs. The bore of this shotgun has some light, short, inconspicuous streaking rear of the lug that affects about 60 degrees for 1-2 inches. Its barrel is 18 inches, Police Cylinder and so marked. This Smith & Wesson 3000 pump riot gun has a 5-shot capacity, 2 ¾ inch shells only. Both floorplate and bolt are chrome-plated, an offering that Remington abandoned in the 1970s. It has a factory-installed recoil pad with S&W logo. This shotgun has a hardwood stock and forend made on the popular and collectable corncob pattern.
This shotgun admirably competed with the venerable Remington 870 and in many respects surpassed the Ilion-made workhorse. What we mean is that Japanese manufactured firearms and knives are intensely desireable while competing items from China are not, with the exception, of course, of Chinese firearms produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s. We often make the half-jesting statement that Japan is now to China what Belgium was to Japan in the 1970s. There was no problem with the quality: Howa of Japan always produces top-quality precision firearms. Description: Introduced in 1983, the Model 3000 represented Smith & Wesson’s ongoing efforts to compete with Remington, both for more Police business and for sporting arms.
